A receiver box for a mid-size profile model aircraft constructed from foamboard, cardboard and/or balsa, with a wingspan of approximately 1 to 1.5 meters (~39 to 60 inches).
The finished compartment is designed to mount a modern standard RC receiver in the center of the fuselage. On the backplane, there is a large opening to facilitate wiring, two small openings for securing the receiver with a tie-wrap; and on the side, there is another opening to route the antenna.
The parts can be easily 3D printed, without any support, on a modern inexpensive 3D Printer. They can be printed with a variety of materials, including PLA, PETG, ABS and many other types of printable materials.
PLA works well for this application. It is easy to print and should last a long time. However, should the model containing the object be left in a hot environment with temperature exceeding ~55 C (~ 130 F), such as a parked car in the summer, a more heat resistant material such as PETG or ABS should be used to print it.
Recommended print settings with a .4 mm nozzle:
- Layer Hight: .150 ~.160 mm, depending on motors and gearing
- 2 perimeters or shells (0.90 ~0.96 mm)
- 6 bottom layers (0.9 ~ 0.96 mm)
- 6 top layers (0.9 ~ 0.96 mm)
- Infill ~20%, depending on infill type

Assembly Instructions
Please note that the parts are designed so that the body is mounted from one side of the model first, then the frame is attached to the other side with your adhesive of choice.
1- Carefully cut an opening of appropriate size for the receiver box – Approximately 26mm X 63 mm (1 1/16” X 2 1/2”). Please double check these measurements with the actual printed part, before cutting the opening.
2- Dry fit the receiver box in the opening cut in the step above. Trim the opening as required to get a snug fit - Not a tight fit!
3- Once satisfied with the fitting of the receiver box, remove it and apply medium CA glue (or epoxy) to the mating surfaces. Re-install the receiver box in the opening to have it bond, then allow the glue to cure.
4- Attach the receiver box frame with medium CA glue (or epoxy) on the other side of the fuselage, bonding it to the outside of the receiver box.
Note: Medium CA glue (or epoxy) is recommended. However, feel free to substitute any other appropriate adhesive you may have on hand.
