This bas-relief was probably originally designed to complete the iconographic program of the western facade of the abbey Saint-Sernin. With a complex iconography whose mysteries have not been fully updated, this work bears witness to the culmination of sculpted art at the Saint-Sernin Basilica. Her style, very impregnated by the late Antiquity, brings her closer to the art of the Silversmiths' portal of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
The inscription inserted between the two female figures gives its title to the work: "Aries sign / Lion sign / This was done in the time of Julius Caesar". An often advanced explanation sees in this relief an allusion to the birth or death of Christ.
