Bienvenidos a Madrid!
La Puerta de Alcalá is a Neo-classical monumental arch in downtown Madrid, Spain. It is regarded as the first modern post-Roman triumphal arch built in Europe, older than the similar monuments Arc de Triomphe in Paris and Brandenburg Gate in Berlin! It used to be the entrance to Madrid coming from the nearby town of Alcalá de Henares, hence the name. It was ordered by king Carlos III of Spain who made an effort to modernize and beautify Madrid. The plaque reads "REGE CAROLO III ANNO MDCCLXXVIII", Latin for "King Charles III Year 1778".
