This sandstone statue comes from Prasat Thma Dap (Phnom Kulen) in the district of Svay Leu, province of Siem Reap. It was discovered in a rock shelter near Prasat Rup Arak.
It was discovered by Philippe Stern in 1936 as he searched to find possible remnants of the reign of Jayavarman II.
The sculpture, 1.52 m high, retains some of its attributes:
- In the right hands, the lower one holds the earth (disappeared), the top, the disc,
- in the left hands, the lower one holds the club, the top one, the conch.
Vishnu wears a cylindrical miter, characteristic representations of the VI-VIII centuries.
The lobes of the ears are pierced in order to accommodate ornaments, now missing. In the pre-Angkorian art, it is customary to adorn the sculptures of precious metal jewellery.
In style, the work of art announces the Angkorian period, including facial and loincloth "double drop anchor."
