Athens (Greece), acquired in 1841
Marble, 350 - 340 BC
Among the votives especially popular in the Classical Age were votive reliefs made of marble. Particularly in Athens and Attica, they were placed in sanctuaries to honour the deities, to lend weight to prayers and to extend thanks to granted favours. More than two thousand preserved specimens grant deep insights into the religious practices of the time.
