×XVI - XVII CENTURY CULVERINE
Culverine was, within the docens, or even hundred of different models of artillery pieces, one of the more common -if not the most- from the end of XV until end of XVI Century.
It was distinguisible by its long barrel. Such barrel length could measure up to 35 times its bore.
The were commonly manufactured by casting in bronze . This manufacturing process turned them very resistant both to the gunpowder and corrossion, but also made them very heavy and expensive.
Culverines were used both in land and naval warfare, the only appreciable difference beetween them would be the Carriage.
The model displayed here correspond with a Spanish Culverine casted in bronze with a Carriage for field use. According to its Carriage and wheels this culverine would have been used during beggining and mid XVI Century. A probable scenary for its use would have been the Italian Wars in the early 1500, the war against the Schmalkaldic League, or any of the many wars against France during the first half of XVI ventury.
