Project:

This spooky lamp project was designed for the trick or treat 3d design Tinkercad contest in the electronic "trick" category. I wanted to design something that included an electronic element as it presents a more interesting challenge and offers learning possibilities. The basic idea was to use a standard dimmer switch built into a lamp to control the brightness. I settled on a cool a way of incorporating the dimmer switch by having the lights dim when the lampshade is twisted. This was accomplished using a large gear on the lampshade and one perpendicular to that attached to the dimmer(more on that later). The lamp shade itself is created of two pressure-fitted parts; the outer portion showcasing bats or other designs(future design possibilities), the inner portion thin enough to allow light to pass through and defuse the light as well.

3d printing of the design

All of the parts except for the outer lampshade was designed to 3d print without supports, there is an included image of these orientations. The lamp shade itself is designed so that any used supports can simply be poked out. All of the parts are designed to be pressure fitted so there is no need for glue or screws after printing only assembling the parts. Ideally, this can be printed with low 3d printing resolution though for a better finish, especially for the outer lampshade, a higher resolution can be used as well.

Electronics

The electronic components involved are,

• a recycled extension cord
• a dimmer switch(must be cut open to bare bones)
• some form of lighting socked, must be completely stripped(either bout or recycled)
• a T10 light bulb

Additionally, these tools are helpful,

• small saw or Dremel
• sandpaper
• wire strippers
• twist-on wire connectors
• electrical tape

These components are assembled as shown in the above picture and fit into the 3d design. There is a holder for the cut open dimmer switch(note this should be done carefully, using a small saw or Dremel), a holder for the light socket, a hole for the cord as well as plenty of space and necessary holes for the wiring involved. Additionally, some components must be put into their correct place within the printed parts before connecting the wires.

NOTE: Use extreme caution when working with electricity and only plug into the wall once fully constructed, use proper safety technics and do so at your own risk.

Assembly instructions

• Clean up or lightly sand the parts if necessary
• Strip the dimmer switch of its shell(note: this can be a lengthy and painful process use proper tools, trust me...)
• Taking the base, place the dimmer switch in its holder(glue may be required) pulling the cords through the back hole
• Attach the small gear to the end of the dimmer switch shaft
• Place the light switch socket in its holder and insert that into the base, pulling the cords downward
• Pressure fit the outer lampshade onto the inner diffuser
• Test lampshade with the dimmer gear and its hole where it should turn smoothly and easily
• Pull the striped extension cord through the hole ion the pack of the base
• Connect the wiring using twist-on wire connectors and electrical tape
• Place the lampshade on top of the base to finish the lamp
• Enjoy your Halloween themed lamp
