Indiana Jones Inspired Treasure Chest
This project was created for the MyMiniFactory / Tinkercad Halloween 2017 Design Challenge sponsored by BCN3D and was 100% designed in Tinkercad with all parts being 3D printable.

I drew a lot of my inspiration from the Indiana Jones movies and the various traps he dealt with across the franchise. The chest itself is similar to the Spike Room trap in the Temple of Doom, where multiple people have to blindly stick their arms through nefarious holes to stop the spikes that are descending. Thankfully, no spikes descend when putting your hand in these chest.
The lower-front portion of this chest has an opening that shows a good selection of snack-sized candies. For the adventerous, sticking your hand further into the opening reveals a handle. When pulled, this handle mechanically opens the lid of the chest, revealing the greatest Halloween treasure: full-sized candy bars! There is an optional lid latch that is hidden just inside the opening for those that want to make revealing the treasure more of a challenge.
Here are a some of the goals I had when I tackled this project:
- Design all parts solely in Tinkercad
- Create a semi-mechanical object that is fully 3D printable without the need for extra parts
- Create an object that is modular for customizability and remixing
- Create an object that could be assembled for a model-builder experience
- Create an object that could be printed on small or large printers
- Design the object to use as little support as possible to save printing time and materials
I was able to accomplish all of these goals and developed a lot of confidence in Tinkercad. The learning curve for Tinkercad is so much lower than a lot of other 3D design software, and being able to easily isolate objects and export STLs made for some quick design and printing.
I hope you enjoy this chest, as it was a lot of fun to make! I'm greatly looking forward to confusing and rewarding all of the trick-or-treaters that come around this Halloween!

Printed in PLA at 0.2mm for speed.
I printed in 4 chunks and uploaded those STLs:
-The top/lid
-The top shelf/latticework
-The walls & bottom
-All bolts, inner handle, and finishing pieces.
Printing in this way kept me from having to glue anything together, and all pieces fit well.
If you want to print in a different way, hop into the Tinkercad model and chose your parts for printing.
If you want to print everything in separate pieces for the model-building experience, I'd recommend scaling up a moderate amount to help the bolts and snap-fasteners work better. Do a test print of some of the smaller nails and snap fastener with a single wall piece to make sure your overall fit and assembly will work out.
