I had to think back to what I would build as a kid from blocks, and I remember always trying to create some transforming type robots (with various levels of success)
So this time, instead of 1 large object transforming into another, how about several smaller ones that can connect in all the odd ways your imagination can think of. They can individually fold into a cube for more ways to connect, plus make it great for a pocket fidget cube when you're thinking of your next idea on the go.
Super straight forward print, no supports required, all joints print inplace. Cube size is 30mm
Design notes:
I went with the diamond shape connectors for ease of printing consistancy whether its a male of female plugs - the overhangs are minimised and there's less issue with consistancy of a circle printed sideways, plus the layer height does not need to be as detailed for a clean arc.
The slots on the female ones have the small slit to allow for minor plastic expansion, this is so the clipping tolerence is kept tight and will "self adjust" if the print quality is slightly out.
I've also added some connectors: male-male, male-female, female-female, to add higher variation in options and as spacers.
Recommend settings
- Layer height: 0.2mm
- Walls: 2 for better strength (at 0.4mm nozzle)
- Infill: 10%
No supports required
2 Stack-a-bots included, one for normal settings and another at a lower joint tolerance for those who trust their printers accuracy - these ones will have stiffer joints.
