Description
In Greek mythology, nymphs are spirits of nature, with nereids being the nymphs of the sea. They used to take care of sailors and their fate, often being described as playful.
This particular depiction is assigned to Giuseppe Mazzuoli, a Roman sculptor, who spent his life working in the baroque tradition of Bernini. The nereid is casually showing off her body, yet is carefully draped in cloth, to add dynamics to an otherwise solid pose. She is supported by a sea monster, who's primary purpose is to support her lithe marble body.
