Description
When Antoninus Pius assumed power in 138 AD, he adopted 17-year old Marcus Aurelius as successor to the throne. This is when the first type of portrait must have originated. The physiognomic characteristics of all portraits of this Emperor are the broad upper eye lid and the raised, arched brows.
