Mercury, the guide from earth to Paradise for the dead, is seated on a rock holding a money-bag (as patron of commerce) accompanied by a ram and tortoise. The ram is a symbol of fertility, and tortoises, whose shells were used to make lyres, may illustrate the eternal happiness of the afterlife promised by Mithraism.
