Tons of cans are wasted every day, but what if we turn this waste into an item used every day?
The aluminum used in drink cans is lightweight but quite strong, with a good thermal diffusivity. Moreover it’s geometry is made to withstand strong pressures. So why don’t we exploit these characteristics?
I designed a simple moka pot composed of 2 parts that easily fit into the can. You just need a used can and some hours of 3D printing to taste a good Italian espresso coffee. How does it work? The can is filled with a small amount of water and the filter is filled with powdered coffee. When heated, the water inside the chamber is pressurised by the steam. This increase in pressure pushes the boiling water through the coffee filter creating the real espresso with the visible “crema”.
Will I drink polymers? No, you can use “Volcano PLA”. It is an industrial PLA that offers high heat resistance after the post processing of annealing (a secondary process in which a plastic part is heated up to improve physical and thermal properties of the printed part).
So the next time you drink a can just keep it for the future. It will become your best friend in the morning!
