This large war memorial in Valenciennes serves as a tribute to French and Commonwealth soldiers of the Great War. The work, created in bronze and marble, is both majestic in its scope but dignified, modest and peaceful. The sculpture depicts two figures: the central character of a draped woman stands above the grave of a soldier. The woman might be the personification of France, as indicated by the text at her feet.
