Description
In stone-poor Mesopotamia, elaborate stucco decorations were the hallmark of Parthian and Sasanian palatial architecture. Stucco surfaces were deeply carved to create complex patterns, and light and shadow made the patterns appear three-dimensional. Today stone-colored, the stucco was originally gilded and painted bright colors. Re-creations would look very gaudy to modern tastes.
