Description
The head emerging from a rough-worked block of stone is modelled on that of the sculptor Camille Claudel, Rodin't studio assistant, protégé and lover. It was originally called Thought Emerging from Matter, pointing to the idea that artists have an inner vision of the subject of their art.
This was scanned at The 'Rodin and the art of ancient Greece' exhibition at The British Museum, London (26th April - 29th July 2018). The work originates from the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, where it is on permanent display.
