Description
This sculpture group was commissioned in 1754 for the gardens of the Château de Bellevue and alludes to the statue “The Marquise de Pompadour as Friendship”. Cupid has been disarmed (his bow and quiver are on the ground) and embraces Friendship openly and without fear. The latter figure is idealised: the attributes of Friendship are present (the plain dress, the bare breast and arms, the profusion of flowers), but the face is not that of Madame de Pompadour.
